A patient’s guide to a safer hospital stay

The Patient Handbook is intended primarily for the adult patient admitted to hospital for the treatment of a physical illness.

The Patient Handbook is a guide to your encounter with the health services. The health services system is a large organisation comprised of many different departments, specialties and treatments. The Patient Handbook provides you with an overview of the various elements of a treatment plan, what you can expect along the way, and issues you should be particularly aware of during your hospital stay.

You can also use the Patient Handbook as a logbook that allows you to track your treatment on a daily basis and make notes that help you to anticipate potential problems. Your notes contain information on your health, your treatment and your examinations. You will find space throughout the Patient Handbook to write, make notes, and gather information.

There are many ways in which you can make use of the Patient Handbook, and we encourage you to use it in any way you wish. We hope that the Patient Handbook contributes to ensuring that you have a safe and comfortable hospital stay.
